Using and buying gear in the GCC

What changes when you use or buy film and photo gear in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Each fact here comes from a national wiring code, a tax authority, the store or the camera maker, all listed under Sources.

Mains power and plugs

Five of the six countries run their mains at 50 Hz; Saudi Arabia runs at 60 Hz. In all six, homes use the 13 A British-style three-pin socket (type G); Kuwait and Bahrain also allow 15/16 A round-pin sockets.

CountryVoltageFrequencyPlug types
United Arab Emirates230 V50 HzG (BS 1363)
Saudi Arabia230 V; 127 V in some buildings60 HzG (SASO 2203); US-type (SASO 2204) on 127 V
Kuwait240 V50 HzG; 15/16 A round-pin also allowed
Qatar240 V50 HzG (13 A)
Bahrain230 V50 HzG; 15/16 A round-pin also allowed
Oman240 V50 HzG (BS 1363) only

Abu Dhabi's regulations prohibit Schuko (CEE 7/7) plugs and allow the two-pin Europlug only through an approved adaptor.

Saudi Arabia is moving homes from 127/220 V to 230/400 V. Its standards body said in 2021 that 127 V was still used in many parts of the country, so check the socket before plugging in a single-voltage device.

The UAE row follows Abu Dhabi's wiring regulations; Dubai's own regulations could not be read when this page was reviewed.

Shipping and import fees

B&H Photo ships worldwide except to six countries, none of them in the GCC, and sends most international parcels by DHL Express. You are the importer, and duties and taxes are never in B&H's item and shipping totals. For many items B&H offers to collect an estimate of them at checkout (Effortless Pre-Pay, on UPS or FedEx shipments only); otherwise you pay them when the courier delivers (Self-Directed). B&H does not list the countries that get Effortless Pre-Pay, so look for it at checkout with your Gulf address.

Amazon.com ships to all six GCC countries through AmazonGlobal. It may charge a fixed amount at checkout for estimated import tax and fees. Which products, rates and fees apply depends on the delivery address, and the recipient is the importer.

On Amazon.ae, prices of items sold by Amazon include UAE VAT. Delivery in the UAE is free on 100 AED or more of eligible items fulfilled by Amazon, otherwise from 10 AED. Amazon.ae also delivers to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

VAT is 5% in the UAE and Oman and 10% in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia charges 15% VAT on imported goods, and Qatar applies no VAT. UAE customs duty is 5% of the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight).

Heat and dust

Camera makers publish an operating temperature range. Sony's FX3, Canon's EOS R5 Mark II, Blackmagic's Pocket Cinema Cameras and DJI's Osmo Pocket 3 are rated for 0 to 40 °C, and Nikon's Z6III for −10 to 40 °C. In high heat, Sony warns, the camera warms up quickly and recording may stop or the camera may turn off.

Canon and Nikon warn against leaving a camera in a car on a hot day, and Sony says a body left in a car parked in the sun may deform.

In its notes on the FX3's cooling fan, Sony says not to use the camera where dust or sand is in the air. Nikon advises wiping sand off with a cloth lightly dampened in fresh water.

Canon and Nikon also warn that moving a camera between cold and warm air can form condensation inside it.
